Location

The Riffelalp Resort is located in the world famous holiday resort of Zermatt at an altitude of 2222 m directly opposite the Matterhorn. The most comfortable way to get there is by train. At the train station in Zermatt, guests are welcomed by the hotel's own porter, who takes care of their luggage and at the same time hands over the tickets for the onward journey. After a few minutes ride on the cogwheel-driven Gornergratbahn, you reach the terminal station at Riffelalp. A comfortable cab service can also be organized from any arrival airport in Switzerland to Zermatt. The Riffelalp Resort has no access road. The hotel can only be reached on wheels of the Gornergratbahn. From the Riffelalp station you can continue on foot or on the Ski-Doo, in summer with the historic tram. Air Zermatt also offers helicopter transfers. (However, it is not possible to fly directly to the hotel).

History

The first hotel on Riffelalp was opened in 1884 and for decades welcomed industrialists, intellectuals and politicians from all over Europe. When it was built, all materials had to be transported by mule from Visp to the alp in ten-hour expeditions. Since the Gornergrat-Bahn could not be directly connected to the hotel grounds for topographical reasons, the hotel operators built a tram line from the railroad line to the hotel as the last connection, which was 469 meters long at the time and considered "Europe's highest tram line". The tram is still in operation today. Although the main building survived two world wars, it was not immune to a large fire that destroyed almost the entire hotel in 1961. Between 1986 and 1988 the "Berghotel Riffelalp" with 40 hotel beds and the "Alpenresidenz Augstkumme" with apartments and vacation homes were built. At the end of the nineties, the Sandoz Family Foundation, in cooperation with the Seiler Hotels, decided to revive the historically significant hotel. At the turn of the millennium, the Riffelalp Resort 2222m opened as a modern luxury hotel. In 2016 and 2017, the hotel was also completely renovated once again and re-furnished with playful elegance by Geneva designer Herve Javet.

Rooms & Suites

The multi-layered wooden chalet offers 65 rooms, five suites and two apartments with modern style elements, which are tastefully integrated into the alpine background. In addition to a towering stone building in the style of the late nineteenth century, the majority of the hotel is built in the Valaisan chalet style. Nature and the mountain panorama are central elements of the interior design and form a unity both inside and outside. The larch attics and the golden wood panelling radiate warmth, while the linen-clad walls lend a special comfort to the atmosphere of the spacious and bright rooms. The pattern of the fluffy carpets in the corridors is based on the slate roofs of the Valais. Nature and tradition are skilfully combined and lovingly integrated into the interior design. In a reading corner, wood-carved bears hold a glass table, fluffy sheep with black faces squeeze themselves together in corridors and niches, faithful images of their natural conspecifics. From the comfortable accommodations, which in addition to the standards have many amenities such as a Jacuzzi bathtub, the free view of the surrounding mountain world is included. On the balcony you can enjoy the sunset in this scenery perfectly. A small tip: Guests are particularly enchanted by the two suites, "Monte Rosa" and "Matterhorn".

Restaurants & Bars

Riffelalp also has a lot to offer in the way of culinary delights. In the gourmet restaurant Alexandre, both in the winter and summer seasons, cosy ambience and a spectacular view of the Matterhorn are combined with regional and Mediterranean specialities to create an exquisite culinary delight. Located in the heart of the hotel and with its wood-panelled walls, the hall radiates pure alpine romance. During the winter months, guests can also enjoy "Live Cooking" every day.

With its distinct "Italianità under the Matterhorn", the Al Bosco is dedicated to the cuisine of the Italian and Swiss Alpine regions during the winter season. Here, chef Luigi Lafranco and his team conjure up true culinary delights. You can choose from Italian classics such as pasta and risotto, main courses of the day and various à-la-carte dishes "dans la cocotte" and the Riffelalp "Gamelle", a hearty soup with spinach, potatoes, leek, pasta and cheese. Guests will also find the popular Matterhorn Pizza, created especially for the hotel.

The regional cuisine of the Valaisan cellar, which is only open in winter, pampers guests with selected Swiss specialties such as cheese fondue, raclette and grill dishes and guarantees a daily treat. The smell of hot simmering cheese attracts cheese lovers of a very special kind every year: Every winter a "Raclette Champion" is also chosen. The person who eats the most portions of raclette is awarded this title. A highlight, especially for longer stays, is the "Wine & Dine" package, with which you can stop for a bite to eat in all the restaurants of the partner establishments both up on Riffelalp and in Zermatt itself.

The Bar 2'222m is located in the heart of the resort and is the ideal meeting point for cultivated entertainment at any time of the day until the early morning hours. Whether it's coffee in the morning, refreshing drinks and delicious snacks at lunch, tea in the afternoon, an aperitif or digestif in the evening - the menu always offers the right accompaniment. The hotel's own vinotheque with wine tastings for hotel guests rounds off the culinary offerings at Riffelalp.

The treatments are supported by Alpine herbs from "Jardin des Monts" or the homemade massage oil. In the interior of the wellness oasis, guests can enjoy the spacious indoor pool with its built-in whirlpool, the Finnish sauna, the bio-sauna, the stone sweat bath SCHÖNBIELHÖHLE or a steam bath. The "Chriiter-Grotta" provides a unique experience, where guests can expect a very special atmosphere of a grotto with stone and water. To relax, dream or simply reading a book, there is also the comfortable relaxation room. A fitness room and a solarium complete the extensive spa offer of Riffelalp.

Always on the spot, the qualified ski instructor and mountain guide Yann of Riffelalp, who, in addition to guided day tours in winter, also explores hiking trails off the mainstream together with guests in summer. The absolute highlight is the opportunity to climb one of the 38 4,000-meter peaks together with Yann. A unique experience to challenge yourself and your body.
